My mother is such a good cook. I grew up knowing that for a fact. She is probably the best cook among all her 7 siblings. My tongue has the capability to taste the dishes which she cooked from the dishes which are not. She is also a keen learner. Recently, she learned how to bake cakes and pastries. In this photo, she is making a type of Malay pastries. She just does it with grace with her nimble hands.

Nyonya Kuih - Kuih Kochi

The first post of 2011 is about food. I love food, no doubt. My mother is very good at making kuih. Kuih is the Malay word for cakes or pastries. One of the kuih she is good at making is Kuih Kochi. It is a type of Nyonya kuih, I think, which is wrapped with banana leaf. The skin of kuih is made from glutinous rice with pandan flavored and the filling is made from grated coconut with palm sugar flavor. This kuih is best to eat when it is hot because the skin is more tender.

One Family!

It is not about food, even though we ate a lot during Chinese New Year. Food is just an enabler for us to have a more joyous time.

It is about the moment of gathering as one family!
It is about catching up with one another in family to maintain the bonding.

It's the time of the year again...

Ya, it is Mid-Autumn Festival again.

It is a bit different this year because my mother has learned how to bake mooncake.

Thus, from now onwards, I only eat the mooncakes that she makes even though I am not a big fan of mooncake.

虽然, 我一向以来都很少吃月饼, 可是今年有一点不同.

因为今年, 妈妈学会了做月饼.

The rice dumpling 包不住的美味

一年里， 妈妈通常都会包两三次的粽子来拜拜，其中一次当然是端午节啦。

真希望每年都能够吃到妈妈的粽子。

因为，妈妈的粽子永远都是一级棒的！

My mother will normally make the rice dumpling for 2-3 times every year. The rice dumpling is always meant for ancestor worshipping.

I really wish my mother could continue to make the rice dumpling every year because that is the best rice dumpling I have eaten so far.

Chinese New Year is almost here!

When I heard the clanking sound of the mould when my mom makes the kuih kapit (or love letter in English). The clanking sound reminds me that the Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Kuih Kapit is one of my favorite cookies which I only get to eat during the Chinese New Year. My other favorite cookies is the peanut cookies which my mom will only make for the Chinese New Year. As a kid, I used to help to my mom to fold the Kuih Kapit into fan shape and stack them into a Milo tin. Right now, I still do the same task most of the time but sometime, I get to take care of 5 or 6 moulds by a charcoal stove. The stove is just a temporary stove which my mom builds using sand, bricks and steel bars on the floor for making the Kuih Kapit. It is a hot and tedious job actually. But then, what is Chinese New Year without Kuih Kapit and peanut cookies!
